R.I. P. J.C. Sheets
Sadly, Faith can add another name to the "remembering" page of this site. J.C. Sheets, former alternate Valjean, passed away ealier this week. Here is a copy and paste of the article from playbill.com.

Actor J.C. Sheets, Veteran of Les Miz, Is Dead
By Robert Simonson
08 Feb 2007

J.C. Sheets, an actor-turned-dresser who spent his career working two Cameron Mackintosh mega-musicals, Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera, died Feb. 4 of an aneurysm. His age could not be immediately learned at press time.

Mr. Sheets joined the Broadway company of Les Miz in 1988 and stayed, on and off, for some eight years. He began by playing the role of Brujon, but would go on to fill 12 different ensemble roles. His biggest responsibility was as alternate and understudy for the lead role of Jean Valjean. He portrayed Valjean more than 300 times on Broadway.

Following his Les Miz tenure, he jumped to Phantom in a new guise, as a dresser in charge of the costumes worn by the actor portraying the Phantom. In this capacity, he dressed such actors as Hugh Panaro and Howard McGillin. He worked back stage at the show until his death.

In addition to Les Miz, Mr. Sheets acted Off-Broadway, regional theatre and in five road shows, including Peter Pan with Sandy Duncan, Annie Get Your Gun with Debbie Reynolds and Camelot with Richard Harris.

A bit late in posting this...I was at Birdland Jazz Club for the Leading Men II BC/EFA benefit when Hugh Panaro announced J.C.'s passing. He'd only just learned of his friend, former castmate, and former dresser's death that afternoon.

He gave a short, touching speech and dedicated his performance of "Right Before My Eyes" to J.C..

"Everything I really need
Is standing here in front of me.
The one thing that my heart should not deny
Is out of reach.
But right before my eyes.
Is out of reach
But right before my eyes."

I was never actually introduced to J.C., but I remember passing him backstage at the Majestic quite a few times when I'd stop there to see Hugh.

After the Leading Men II concert, I had a chance to chat with Hugh and he spoke of J.C. with so much love and respect. He said he was one of the finest Valjeans he knew and, even after health concerns damaged his own voice, he continued to take a very active interest in the performances of others.
